keeping it simple

Today was a busy day with several errands and appointments, so I kept today’s direct watercolor sketch simple: I painted what was directly in front of me! These are the paint colors I’ve been using for the #30x30DirectWatercolor2018 challenge, loosely based on Marc Taro Holmes’ absolute minimum choices. I keep a pocket palette of the same in my bag but so far I’ve been painting these at home, using this slightly larger palette.

Bardie was very interested in my sketchbook as I took the above photo. Or possibly he was wondering when I would finish this silliness and feed him?

  1. Your sketches are wonderful! How do you like working this way?

    1. I both like and dislike it. I miss my fountain pens and still “think in line” but I like how, when it works, this direct watercolor seems more artistic.

  2. Vicky—good for you keeping to your commitment to the challenge despite appointments. I am amazed how you were able to depict glass direct without some guidelines for keeping the whites. I so wish I could have participated in this challenge—but alas my schedule is just crazy now—and it wouldn’t have been wise for me at this time!

    1. You could always set your own version of the challenge — perhaps one direct watercolor per week? But it’s always best to follow wisdom.

The water jar is a reused plastic container that stevia came in. I can open the hinged top to work, then flip it down to keep my cat from drinking (or playing in) the water! I “drew” it loosely with the grey on grey watercolor first to get the basic shape.

    2. Maybe my own version will be to do one once in a while when I have a free moment! 😉. By the way, what size journal are you working in for this challenge? Did you see The one Steve Mitchell is working in? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ClTWCuy3XGs I ordered one and it arrived today. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fabriano-Watercolor-100-Cotton-Field-Book-5X7-in-3-cover-colors-15-sheets/232764632013?hash=item3631da6bcd:m:mxK0FUj3Bn4hPo9nc0Yllhw

    3. I really need to take time to figure out the changes to Blogger with that European thing! It is no longer sending me notifications of comments . . .

For the 30 x 30 challenge, I am using an old Carnet de Voyage Travel Book made by Arches. I found it at Hobby Lobby around 2006 when a guy first introduced me to watercolor. He loves Arches paper; I found that I do not! But the book has 15 sheets — if I work on both sides, I have my 30 days of June.

Fabriano Artistico is my favorite paper to work on! Have fun with your own personal definition of painting! I think the main point is getting in some regular practice, no matter how that fits into your life.

    4. Oh, I forgot the size:
This sketchbook is 6 x 10”, landscape format.

  3. Vicky—just curious why you don’t like Arches? I am glad I finally got my site GDPR compliant. That was a lot of work! Hopefully “Blogger” has some good tech support that can help you. I am not an expert, but if I can help in anyway, just let me know.

    1. I think it’s the heavier sizing in Arches that I don’t care for. Watercolor and ink just don’t move the same on it. Also, it can’t be easily folded and torn down to bind in sketchbooks.
