a sadness . . .

I was up in the wee hours of this morning, comforting our black Scottish Fold Straight cat, Scottie Dubh, who was searching for his brother, Bardie. Who is no longer with us. After calming him down, I did this sketchbook page.

These are the sketches I did of Bardie as a kitten. Such a serious-faced little guy!

in hope of leftovers

I snapped a quick photo of our granddaughter’s hound, Molokai, just before we sat down to eat Easter dinner. But I didn’t get around to sketching him until this morning.

This is the final sketch in this tiny sketchbook. My next purse-size sketchbook will be a bit bigger: a watercolor insert that fits the passport sized Traveler’s Notebook.

Merry Christmas!

I hope y’all are having a lovely and blessed Christmas! Today I did a quick ink & wash sketch between baking tasks. We saw this truck at our veterinarian’s when we took the wee beasties in for nail trims; I snapped a quick photo to sketch from later.

(Yes, the tree top was really tilted like this.)

Ink, watercolor, and gouache in a 140mm square Seawhite travel journal.

a neigh-bor

Today’s ink sketch was done from a photograph I took early last month when temperatures were still over 90°. This rescue horse living next door has a very white face; the fly mask is for protection from UV rays. The mask is no longer needed with our cooler days in the 70s, but the large horses have been moved away to a different area.

There was a wire fence separating my corgi and the horse but I chose to not draw it in. Whenever this particular horse saw her out in the pasture, he would run over just to be near her. He would calmly nibble the grass while she sniffed around. Maybe picking up on the gophers’ and moles’ gossip.

Scottie Dubh’s rose

Today’s ink sketch began as a continuous contour line. Then I added a bit of white gel pen. Then I tried adding some shadow with the gray ink felt tip pen. Overworked maybe?

We grew wonderfully fragrant antique roses at our cabin near Lake Somerville. I drew this from a photo taken 6 years ago. Scottie is still as inquisitive as ever, but also an independent “touch me not”, not wanting to be held in any manner. He sometimes has vocal arguments with himself in the middle of the night. Our vet jokingly said maybe he’s autistic.

no playing today

Today I’m brushing and bathing my corgi. She would rather play ball but she is walking a bit odd so we’ll be checking her out at the vet’s. She’s had joint issues in the past; she fetches her ball with such abandon that she can easily get injured. Or fall in the numerous golpher holes out there.

After drawing this, the room’s lighting changed, casting that interesting second shadow. Maybe I’ll add that.

a wee visitor

Today’s tiny sketch is from a photo taken last week. As I climbed into bed, I noticed this bright orange lizard climbing the wall. Our cats, Bardie and Scottie, were busy chasing tiny gnats they could hardly see yet they were completely oblivious to this 4” lizard just a few feet away. I’m sure he was laughing at them.

not sleeping

The past couple of years I have gone through a weird change in sleep habits. Most of my life I was a night owl, up late and sleeping in whenever I could. But my days and nights seem topsy-turvy now. Early to bed, reading only a chapter or two before conking out, then 2:00 or 3:00 a.m. finds me wide awake.

Butters the corgi wonders why I’m not in bed, asleep. She is NOT a morning person!

Unfortunately, I’m so tired during the days that I have not begun those two workshops that I recently won . . .

The background was sketched with the Lamy Safari and J. Herbin “Lie de The” ink. The double recliner was sketched with a Pentel Pocketbrush pen with brown ink.

what I’ve been reading

When I take a break from reading something really thought-provoking, I often sketch the book while thinking about the bits I’ve just read. Somehow that action tends to cement the thoughts, helping me to remember. My cat, Bardie Mac, tried to help me as I drew this, coming between me and the sketchbook many times.

This little ebook (also available as an actual book, HERE) or can be read free on Wayne’s website (HERE) has many things that I wish to remember. So encouraging for those who have experienced the love of the Father . . . and those who seek Him.

taking it easy

She smiles even in her sleep. But a much bigger, wider grin when it’s time to play ball.

recent sketches

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of things other than sketching. The root beer bottle was inked in early last week . . . then just sat on my desk unfinished. Reading, baking sourdough, taking care of animals, cooking meals more often (my husband usually cooks but he has serious back issues and is facing back surgery later this summer), swimming when it isn’t pouring rain (which lately seems to be daily), replacing a refrigerator that doesn’t want to play nicely anymore — in other words, “normal life” kept me from sketching.

The tiny wildflower was seen while walking my corgi. The silly hound dog, Molokai, belongs to our granddaughter. Both sketched without fussing the details.

The bottle opener next to the bottle was once ours. When our daughter set up her first apartment during college we gave it to her, saying we could always replace it. Then never did. I ran over to her house last week to borrow it.

Skye (aka “Baby”)

Our dear friend Miss B.J. lost her beloved husband (our pastor, Gary) just over 2 years ago. This wee chihuahua, Skye, was Gary’s constant companion through his illness — then B.J.’s since then. She was one of the few chihuahuas I’ve known that was sweet and loving to all who met her. B.J. used to take her to visit a nursing home, dressed up in one of her many outfits. She even had her own biker jacket to match Pastor Gary’s and Miss B.J.’s!

Sadly, we heard yesterday that Skye had died. I have no photos of her; I found a sympathy card online but it was too large. It said exactly what I wanted to say, so I sketched a rough copy for this card. Not my own original design, but I hope it comforts our friend.

a creepy critter’s tower

As I was walking with my corgi in the south pasture, I found what appeared to be a tiny tower hidden among some clover. At first I wondered if it had something to do with the frogs who burrow in the ground.

But after searching online, I found out that this tiny mud structure is built by a prairie crayfish! An actual land-dwelling crayfish! They live underground in deep, water-filled burrows. These “chimneys” provide air circulation as well as offering shelter to other wildlife — including those burrowing frogs.

I’m just glad the wee creature didn’t make an appearance while I was studying his handiwork — this photo of one I found online is positively creepy!

Butters, resting

After arriving home yesterday, Butters had a quick game of fetch (she missed playing at camp because she had to be on leash), then she quickly fell asleep.

Keeping up with us is sometimes hard work.

Molokai

We have a new member of our extended family: meet Molokai, our granddaughter’s new dog. She is currently attending Texas A & M vet school and was told to practice on her pet — and if she didn’t have one handy, they had vet school animals up for adoption. Who could have guessed that adopting a pet was a classroom requirement?

Actually she has pets here on “the farm” but most of them object to examinations. Butters doesn’t mind, but corgis are just built wrong (so says our vet who was examining her for a joint injury). So this sweet 6 year old hound has moved in to Mikala’s apartment.

I took a couple of “process” photos of this sketch . . . but once I began painting, I forgot to take any more. Most of the time, I put down an idea lightly in pencil, then begin inking it in — often jotting down some text before moving on to the main sketch.

after playing fetch

Keeping it simple: I sketched this in blue (I keep blue lead in this mechanical pencil), then added a few ink lines. Our corgi, Butters, wears herself out fetching her favorite rubber ball . . . then is eager to play again after a short rest.

30 October 2024

exploring . . .

We just arrived at our campsite on Lake Conroe. As Bill took care of the RV hookups, Butters and I headed down to our own private lake view . . . then climbed back up the live tree root steps. (It’s steeper than these photos show!)

83° (feels like a muggy 86°) with thunder in the distance.

happy birthday, Judah!

Several years ago I had an Etsy shop that is now closed, leaving a few unsold sketches on the shelf. One of our grandsons has a birthday next week and he happens to loves cats. So I tore down the edges and turned this sketch into his birthday card.

Seven years ago we stayed in a bed-and-breakfast where this Turkish Van cat lived. This urn sat on a picnic table and really was his outdoor water dish. A sketch just waiting to happen!

Bentley, a friend of Butters

Butters and I usually walk in the early morning before the “stupid humid” heat gets unbearable.

Some mornings, our neighbor’s dog, Bentley, walks slowly out to the lane to greet us. Butters sits and waits patiently, seeming to know that the elderly guy can’t move very fast.

Painting his graying coat was a bit tricky!

Butters in blue ink

A simple ink sketch of Butters as she snuggled next to me. She does not like rain, so recent storms have been a bit nerve-wracking for her.

I drew this directly in ink using the blue ink cartridge that comes with Kaweco Liliput fountain pens and my Fire Blue Liliput, plus a bit of white Gelly Roll pen. The small kraft paper notebook is from Travelers Company.
