leftover samples

So what do y’all do with watercolor samples that you’ve decided not to use? I thought I’d give them to grandchildren to paint with, but none of them are really into painting anymore. When I used to meet up with other sketchers at sketch crawls in the Kansas City area, we used to trade art supplies we no longer used — but I’ve never found anyone local to sketch with.

So I guess I’ll just sketch these samples in my sketchbook and stick them back in my stash. Or throw them away?

UPDATE: after gathering more unused art supplies, my daughter is mailing them to her high school friend Charity, who now teaches art at a Kansas college — she keeps a “freebie” box for students.

  1. I have one of those Cheap Joe's samples. I thought it was really cute they way they did it like a travel palette. The material mine is made out of looks like it can be composted.
Do you ever get to Austin? We have a place called Austin Creative Reuse. They take donations of arts and crafts supplies and resale them. You never know what you will find there.

    1. Cindy, what a great idea! I seldom get to the Austin area, but maybe I can add some more supplies to donate some time in the future? I found their address by googling the name. Thanks so much!
I do love the design of these samples and American Journey is a great brand; I just prefer to use single-pigment watercolors and most of these are mixes. I thought I would someday use them but it’s been a few years and they haven’t been touched. Someone else might as well enjoy them!

    2. Cindy, would they take art instruction books? I’ve been trying to thin down my bookshelf as well. Trying to simplify and keep just what I actually use (or am most inspired by!)

  2. Vicky, Yes, they will take art instruction books. They will take just about anything. I took my whole collection of Threads magazines, they took them, and someone bought them pretty quick!
My only problem with them, is I take donations, but I buy something else every time I go in.

    1. Yes, that would definitely be a temptation for me as well! As would being that close to Jerry’s Artarama — I would have to stop while in the area, right?
