little log cabin, deep in the heart of Texas

After a week of looking at lots of houses in 5 different areas, we ended up buying the exact house we first drove by last June when we first began looking at houses for sale in Texas. Very surprised that it was still on the market, since houses in the area usually sell withing 1 to 2 months. Even more surprised when they accepted our first offer, quite a bit below the asking price. We both love log houses --- never thought we would actually get to live in one someday!

A VERY tiny house, just right for the 2 of us, near a lake. No woodshop for Bill yet, but with such a large yard (3 lots) we can build one ourselves . . . with a guest house attached for visitors. There is additional sleeping in the loft but not everyone would be able to manage the steep stairs --- more like the stair-ladders Bill knew aboard a Navy ship.

Part of the loft has a balcony & windows facing north-east -- that will be my art space. Along with the whole outdoors, of course. There are a variety of trees on our lot, including a small treehouse for grandkids. And a small planting strip along the sidewalk leading to the front patio, perfect for an herb bed. Provided the deer stay away from it. Not sure if they come into this housing development or not.

  1. Wow.. congrats. I have been thinking of you. this is a cool house. I am sure he can build the perfect shop for him. As for the Deer. We buy something called LIQUID FENCE and spray on plants and it works. you just have to keep it on regularly when flowers bloom. It smells at first but goes away but not to them. They dont like sulfur.
So when will you get the place? Look forward to more. Hope Hubby is doing better too.

  2. Thanks, Cris! This house is so small, we are thinking we will just move ourselves instead of hiring a moving van. Need to get rid of more stuff . . .

The liquid fence spray sounds good, but the herbs will be for cooking. If it is sulfur-based, I'm very allergic to it. I was actually allergic to Bill's grandma's water because of too much naturally-occuring sulfur.

We don't close until Jan. 15, delayed by the holidays. Will probably move at the end of Jan. Bill seems to be healing slowly but surely, though there's a lot of strained muscle pain in his right shoulder. Who knows what position they had him during the bypass?

  3. Oh yeah..it's not good for anything you eat. Didn't see that. But the other thing we do is chicken wire. Not always pretty, but you do what you need to do. :) glad you don't have to move in December, like we did.

    1. Thank you, Jana! Still trusting the Lord with his healing, which continues to slowly improve.

  5. Get yourself the cheapest sweet feed (for horses)… put it in a tub away from your house and garden… if there are dear in the area they will eat the sweet feed… if they aren't around… well problem solved… if you feed them back there in the winter, cut them back a little in the Spring and they should stay out of your garden… at least that's what I did when I lived in Alabama to keep the deer away from my garden.

    1. Thanks, Elaine! That seems like a great solution . . . if deer in fact visit the yard. We saw plenty of deer around properties on the north side of the lake, so they are probably in this area as well. Our cabin is a bit further away from the actual lake to the south-east, on a circle drive with around 35 other homes. I would love to watch and sketch them.
