my wake-up call

Every morning around 6:30 I am woken up by this sweet girl calling to me. One day this week, I tried to take a photo of her — she stepped up in my face as if to say “where’s my hay?” Tater and her companion, Tot, live in our pastures defending their territory (and the goats) from intruders such as the local coyotes and bobcats.

  1. What a face! how close to your window is she? I have never met a donkey. I saw some on tv on Yorkshire Vet last night. They look like are characters !

    1. No window — I had just entered the pasture and was trying to take her picture with my phone. She stuck her head in my face to remind me that I was there to get her some hay!

I’ve loved donkeys since reading “Brighty of the Grand Canyon” as a child, then later seeing them in person at the Grand Canyon, but never thought I’d have my own. They are delightful characters and very intelligent. Seekers of peace, curious, a long memory, outgoing personalities. It’s been very slow “taming” these two to eventually accept a halter (the vet and farrier won’t come check them out unless they are haltered) — who knows what bad experiences they are remembering with the previous owner.

Rachel Anne Ridge wrote a book, “Flash: the Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me About Life, Faith, and Second Chances” — it captures a lot of what they are like.
