Sunday morning and here I sit, on a plastic sofa in a hospital room in Tomball, TX.
On Wednesday our wee cat Bardie got his leg caught in the iron leg of a vintage ice cream parlor chair. We’re not sure if he was trying to jump onto the table or off of it — either way, he somehow missed. We heard his terrified screams and came running to help; he was so panicked that Bill had to let him bite his left wrist while freeing the cat’s leg with his right. We were afraid that Bardie had broken his leg, as horrific as the screams sounded, but he was fine. Just very embarrassed.
We knew cat bites are serious injuries and Bill was in major pain with lots of blood, so we headed to a nearby 24/7 ER in Magnolia. After a thorough cleaning, a tetanus shot, and antibiotics, we were sent home with wound care instructions. (It didn’t help any that one tooth went deeply into a bad fire ant bite from a few days previously.)
All seemed well until late Saturday afternoon — swelling and pain increased enough to head back to ER. This time, they sent him to their hospital in Tomball for a few days of IV antibiotics. This is often necessary following cat bites so we sort of expected it.
Just a tad bit more intense, as the Corona virus has appeared in the Woodlands. Hospitals are limiting visitors; those that are allowed in are interviewed, info recorded, and wrist-banded as cleared.

Oh my goodness! What a traumatic experience for all of you! Poor Bill! I hope he is home soon! I'm glad Bardie's leg is not broken. How is Bill's nerve pain?
ReplyDeleteThis infection has really knocked him down for a time — but he has always been a bit of a work-a-holic. Maybe the Lord is giving him opportunity for rest because he won’t take it on his own? Getting older, losing some of his strength and stamina, is hard for him.
DeleteWe haven’t been back to the new neurologist yet for consultation but the MRI shows bulging discs in his upper spine — in the Exact Same Place that his previous surgeries were supposed to take care of! His nerve pain apparently is still related to pinched nerves in that area. So was the previous neurosurgeon not aggressive enough?
They have found a new medication that helps tremendously with the pain in his right arm. It’s not a “pain drug”, being more for seizures, but seems to be blocking the nerves messages to his brain.
How horrific! So happy to hear that everything is being done for Bill's wrist to heal well and as quickly as possible. Bulging discs? OMG, I shudder to think that he may need additional surgery/surgeries. Please keep us updated about his next doctor's visit. Keeping Bill in my prayers. And now that Bardi, PHEW, no broken leg! Poor baby. I hope he has settle down, no longer scared or embarrassed.
ReplyDeleteThrough daily blood tests, they have determined that Bill’s infection is “deep tissue” but NOT in the bone, as cat bites often progress to. He is responding well to the IV medications and we expect him to be able to come home in a few days.
DeleteBardie is his sweet lovable self. He’s just taking it easy at the farm, playing with his brother and watching the goats and donkeys from his favorite windows.
I don't like hearing that at all! Bill's had too much healing to do. Hope he's on the right side of recovery now. Still enjoying your handiwork even if I don't get out to blog sites as often. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteOur daughter told Bill just yesterday that we need to find him a new hobby — a trip to the hospital every year is not a good one!
DeleteHope all is well with you and Wilma. I miss our old sketchcrawls!
