It came as a complete shock when I was chosen as one of three winners in Art Toolkit’s recent Summer Workshop Giveaway! With my love of sketching bits of nature, one of the awarded workshops I chose is “Pollinators in Ink” with Robin Lee Carlson. Her recommended supply list included toned watercolor paper; my current journal has white paper so I decided to make a small pocket journal of toned paper for the workshop and for practicing the learned techniques in further nature studies.
The tutorial for making these pocket journals was presented by Texas artist Judith Dollar and Art Toolkit’s Maria Cornell-Martin last March. The original one shown in the video started with an 11 x 15” piece of paper; I increased this to about a 14 x 18” piece of heavy double-sided wrapping paper. The original journal had an accordion-fold insert of multi-media paper; for this toned paper, I sewed folded papers together using a Coptic stitch.
The third photo shows the version I made last March, measuring 3 3/4 x 5 1/4”, next to the new one, which is 4 1/2 x 7”. The pocket in front is a great place to stash a Pocket Palette!
Hi Vicki, congratulations on winning the class. How on earth did I miss this class? Your folded sketchbooks are great! I’ve made accordion style pocket sketchbooks but not with a folded cover. I’m going to have to check into this class and see if it’s going to be given again or if it’s on video somewhere.
ReplyDeleteBefore we moved Florida, I had a big pad of memory book paper in different
designs that would’ve been perfect for a pocket journal cover. Now I’m going to have to check my art supplies and see if I still have it because you’ve inspired me to try this.
Thanks for another inspiring post Vicky!
These folded pocket journals were not a class — they were a free demo given by Art Toolkit! In my post, there are certain phrases in dark red letters (I know they don’t show up very well but I don’t know how to change color) — these are live links to the product or site mentioned. just click on “The tutorial for making these pocket journals” and you will find the video.
DeleteYou can find other Art Toolkit demos on their YouTube channel or the Art Toolkit blog. I’ve never taken one of the paid workshops before but I love learning from these live demos!
Like you, I’ve made accordion fold journals before but did a different kind of cover that was more like a school folder of one large piece of heavy paper — it had lower extensions on the front and back that I folded up to form inside pockets that held the first and last pages. But not nearly as cool as Judith’s design!
BTW, I have met and sketched with Judith a couple of times. She is head of Urban Sketchers Houston but she lives in Galveston — the opposite side of Houston from our rural area west of Houston.

DeleteWell I’m feeling a bit embarassed that I didn’t notice the highlighted links to click on Vicky. My excuse is I just had cataract surgery and I’m also reading your post from my phone. But oh am I going to have fun with the class!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this! Another wonderful Vicky post!!

No problem! I thought it was because the dark red color is hard to see.
DeleteCataract surgery is certainly interesting, and a bit daunting! But I love the results I got — I was able to have corrective lens implanted so I no longer need to wear glasses.
Blessings to you, Dorothy!
